False Fairness: When Openness Becomes Self-Abandonment
How the nervous system confuses “being open-minded” with avoiding rupture — and how to tell when you’re collapsing instead of listening.

Most people mistake emotional neutrality for emotional maturity.
They think being “open-minded” means being endlessly flexible, endlessly understanding. But there’s a point where openness becomes erasure — where curiosity becomes camouflage for fear.
I’ve seen this in my clients, and I’ve lived it myself.
When you spend years reading other people’s emotions to stay safe, openness becomes your armor. You call it fairness or empathy — but really, it’s vigilance in disguise. You’re scanning for rejection while pretending to be objective.
That’s not virtue. That’s survival.
The Anatomy of False Fairness
You can spot it in your body before your mind catches it:
- Energetically: you feel hollow or slightly outside yourself while listening.
- Cognitively: you start dismantling your own needs before anyone else gets the chance.
- Somatically: your chest or gut collapses inward, as if retreating from your own stance.
- Relationally: you keep the peace — and later resent everyone for not knowing what you never said.
This is self-abandonment wearing the mask of diplomacy.
It keeps you “safe,” but at the cost of your truth.
The Physiology of Genuine Curiosity
True curiosity doesn’t destabilize you — it regulates you.
It lives in grounded breath, in the weight of your feet, in a spine that stays upright while your mind explores.
You’re not trying to be convinced.
You’re testing your center against another’s reality — without collapsing.
That’s curiosity as power, not as people-pleasing.
The Practice of Differentiation
Before any dialogue, ask three diagnostic questions:
- Am I here to understand — or to avoid disapproval?
If your body tenses at the thought of being misunderstood, that’s not curiosity. That’s fear. - If I hear something that challenges me, can I stay anchored?
If not, ground first. Don’t call it openness if your body isn’t safe enough to listen. - Do I still grant myself authority to decide after hearing them?
If your permission evaporates once others speak, you’re not being fair — you’re disappearing.
The Integration Point
Real mastery is this:
“I can fully see your perspective — and it still doesn’t change what I know.”
That’s the hinge between openness and self-respect.
Between curiosity and collapse.
Between empathy and embodiment.
To be absolute in what you know is not to be rigid. It’s to be rooted.
And the stronger your roots, the more gracefully you can bend.
